NORTH LONG LAKE ASSOCIATION
MERRIFIELD MARATHON CLUBHOUSE
The North Long Lake Association Board of Directors Meeting
at the Merrifield Marathon Clubhouse was called to order by
President Kay Hondo at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 8, 2012.
Also present were Doug Hohman, Vice President, Willard
Hartup, Secretary; Marty Peisch, Treasurer; James Cook; Joe
Laudenbach; Bill Schmidt; and Jeff Weaver.
Minutes. Minutes of the meeting held on October 11,
2012 were approved as moved and seconded by Jeff Weaver and
Marty Peisch.
Treasurer's report. Transactions leading to the
November checking balance of $8,189.84 included: $2,075.00
received in membership dues, $1,825 in AIS donations, and
expenses of $7,841.77. Savings account balance is
$17,059.11.
Membership. Kay Hondo reported receiving dues from 71
members during the past month bringing the 2012 total to
282. Receipts for 2012, including both dues and
contributions, amount to $17,667 as compared to $12,026 at
this point last year. Members have been more generous this
year than last.
Curly leaf pondweed. Sandy Loney is working with Lakes
Restoration on plans to treat our affected 2 acres with
Aquafol K next spring. Bill Hartup will secure homeowner
agreements to accompany the application for a permit.
Later in the meeting, Jim Cook proposed that we ask A&W
Research Labs to conduct an aerial survey of Merrifield Bay
to determine current extent of infestation. Owing to lack of
time to discuss, it was agreed that Kay Hondo would contact
Lakes Restoration to determine if such a survey would assist
in treatment next spring; she and Jim Cook would discuss
results and make a recommendation to the Board who will vote
on the matter by e-mail.
Grant applications for funds to pay AIS inspectors at the
public accesses next summer will be due soon and will be
written by Bill Hartup. Among other funding sources
mentioned for assistance with AIS control was 30 Lakes
Watershed District.
Loon nests. Deb Johnson reported, based on
consultation with Dean Brodie, that two loon nesting
platforms would cost $185 without cover or $269 with cover.
A motion to purchase two platforms with cover was approved
after being moved by Marty Peisch and seconded by Deb
Johnson. It was agreed that a review is needed before
further investment in loon platforms because these are only
needed on lakes where the birds try to nest and cannot.
By-laws and mission statement. Bill Schmidt is
working on by-laws and a mission statement to be discussed
next spring.
Artificial spawning reefs will be investigated by Jeff
Weaver.
Clothing remainders will be mentioned in Kay Hondo's next
letter to e-mail correspondents.
Newsletter will be mailed next week.
Environmental issue. Motion was approved after being
made and seconded by Bill Hartup and Joe Laudenbach that Deb
Johnson write to our Congressional Representatives regarding
legislation affecting the discharge of ballast water into
the Great Lakes.
Respectfully submitted,
Willard Hartup
Secretary
